Meeting Past Students at the Novi Sewing Expo

Sitting in the airport waiting for my flight… on Delta (because my US Air flight was super delayed… and I have to get back to teach Portfolio at 5:00!)   I am so glad that I decided to come to the Novi Sewing Expo… I had no idea what I was missing!  After the first day working in the booth, I attended the ASDP fashion show “Hello!”   It featured garments made for the Threads Magazine Challenge.   This year the theme was lace.  When it was announced last year, I was tempted to enter, but I had too many other things on my plate.  I’m so bummed that I didn’t have my real camera with me… It was dark and none of the pics I tried to snap with my iphone came out.  … But it was amazing!  In my opinion, the two most innovative uses for lace were– 1. Christmas Ribbon uses to make a short and sassy party dress.  The wire edged ribbon was actually taken apart so that different elements of the ribbon could be use independently … or as is.  It was amazing, you would have never guessed it was made from Ribbon on a Roll!   The second technique that blew my mind was the use of lace and fake fur.  Lace was used as an overlay.  The fur was pulled and teased through the lace to create really interesting texture.   … I will update this post to include the talented designer’s names…

Another highlight of the weekend was meeting students from previous workshops. First, Juliette visited the booth…She had taken the Jean Fit Workshop at the National ASG Conference last year in LA.

She was wearing her j stern design jeans… They looked amazing.  I love the vertically striped fabric she used … and the fit was perfect.

Here’s the front view

and the back view.   … and she came back the next day with another cool pair of jeans on, this time in class dark blue denim!

I also met a couple of talented ladies who have taken classes with me on Patternreview.com… I’ll share them with you tomorrow.  … I have to board my plane in a few minutes!

Happy Day, Jen

So nice to see you again, Jennifer! My jeans fit great thanks to you! That fitting class was wonderful–now I have a great fitting pattern for non-stretch denim. :)

  2. Hi Jennifer,

I love Juliette’s striped pants – and the fit is perfect. We take jeans seriously in LA:)

I am making this week – your other khaki pants pattern (in black). . . This is inspiring me to make more jeans though. I’m off two weeks on a sew-cation!
